A Look at AZDD Tryouts

When are tryouts held?

We hold tryouts at least twice a year. Follow us on Facebook, or return to this page, for word when dates and details are announced.

Who can be an Arizona Derby Dame?

The Arizona Derby Dames welcomes women ages 18 and older to tryout. If you’ve been in other roller derby leagues, and live in the Phoenix area, we’d love to see you at tryouts.

AZDD also welcomes young women ages 10-17 to our juniors team, the Minor Assaults. You can find out how at

What to expect at Tryouts

Have the following ready for tryouts:

  • Water
  • Loose-fitting, comfortable clothes, such as sweats, shorts, t-shirts.
  • Application fee (usually $10). Announced with tryout dates.
  • Basic skating skills.
  • Commitment, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.

No spectating. Our tryouts are closed to the public, so family, friends, and significant others, are not allowed to spectate. This helps everyone focus during tryouts, and reduces the pressure to perform.

Come ready to learn, and don’t be afraid to fail; while we’ll assess your skating abilities, a commitment to growth and learning, with a positive attitude, go a long way. Once in the league, you’ll go through Fresh Meat, and learn more advanced techniques from our trainers.

Roller Derby is a contact sport, and we recommend that you don’t purchase skates or safety gear before trying out – they can be expensive, and may not meet the quality and safety requirements needed for Banked Track Roller Derby.

At tryouts, we’ll provide:

  • Skilled trainers to introduce the basics of playing Roller Derby.
  • Helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards to borrow.
  • Information and answers to your questions about the league.

You’ll be asked to fill out an information sheet, and will be interviewed by AZDD trainers, captains, or managers, where you can ask questions about Roller Derby and AZDD.

You made it! What's next?

When you pass tryouts, you are officially Arizona Derby DamesĀ Fresh Meat.

Fresh Meat are expected to:

  • Volunteer for bout setup, production, and cleanup.
  • Attend 2 practices minimum per week, for 4-5 months.
  • Attend league meetings.
  • Purchase gear:
    • Skates
    • Indoor and outdoor wheels
    • Helmet
    • Knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards
    • Mouth guard
    • … and eventually your team uniform!
  • Attend a Skills Test (at the end of Fresh Meat).

Your Fresh Meat period will be a chance for you to get to know the Arizona Derby Dames, and for us to get to know you. We want to make sure you’re a great fit for the league, and that we’re a great fit for you. Always bring a positive commitment and willingness to fail and learn – it will go a long way in your time with Roller Derby.

Practices are at the Hall of Dames, where we hold our scheduled bouts. Just like tryouts, practices are not open to spectators – including family and friends.

At the end of training, you’ll take a skills test designed to ensure you can compete safely with AZDD. After the skills test, you’ll be drafted to one of the home teams.

Team Draft

Once you’ve been drafted to a home team, continue to contribute to the league: volunteer for bouts to keep the event exciting and running smooth for fans. Attend team and league meetings, promotions, and appearances. Skaters volunteer for communities around Phoenix – a great way to get to know fans and league members.

As a team member, expect to attend at minimum one team practice, and one league practice, per week. Keep up the commitment and willingness to learn and grow with the league. Our Fresh Meat are an important part of our league, and we couldn’t do it without you!

Once you are Fresh Meat, Arizona Derby Dames will help you learn the recommended brands of gear, where to find the best prices, and where you can get AZDD discounts.

Expect to invest a minimum of $350 for your gear. There is a one-time fee for joining Fresh Meat, and monthly dues that support the league.

Additional costs should be expected throughout your time in Roller Derby, including maintaining skates and other gear.
