That's right! I am 4' 10" and I'm a jammer! It will come in time. Keep working hard at it and try not to get discouraged. Focus on your skating form and skating in skater's position, that will help you with your balance. Skate the track properly (5 stride) bc that will help you out a lot as well. Once you've got that down, the speed with come in no time. Outdoor skating does help a LOT! I've skating at the garage a lot. Sprinting up the ramps helps out very much!

Here's what helped me improve greatly (and I miss doing it!)

Pick a skater you admire in style, speed and grace. Ask if you can pace behind that skater, watch how she skates and do your best to pick up on her moves. If it feels comfortable, stick with it!

Mine was Celeste. I loved pacing behind her, trying to keep up and especially learning from her how she moved her body, feet and torso.

(I also had horrible bunions until I joined her team. She suggested that maybe my bunions had something to do with my skating form. She was right, I changed my form, became more comfortable on my skates and didn't have problems with those suckers popping out at the wrong time anymore. Thanks Celeste!)

Work on ENDURANCE alot, skate hard a lot and long distance is great.
All the suggestions here are perfect. Following a skater faster than you is great.
Speed skating classes will help a lot too.

Skater position helps. The lower you are the longer your strides will be which will push you farther faster. Same as if you were running, if you stand straight up as you run you will basically be doing fast baby steps. You want to extend the full length of your legs, spead those legs wide, thats the goal.

when I first started I asked "how can I get faster"
the advice I got was "move your legs faster"
I thought the advice was kinda shitty but basically it was right Laughing

sidenote!
I worked with Lynn outdoors at Tempe Town Lake and we discovered her wheels were WAY too tight and restricting the bearings! So it's also important to fiddle with your gear and find the right settings for you!
